7 Iconic Things that Made the 1990's

We can all agree that the 1990’s were one of the most influential decades of all-time. The emergence of new music genres, eccentric fashion trends, and even the evolution of gaming quickly transformed into pop culture as we know it today. Here is a list of 7 things that shaped the 1990’s into one of the most nostalgic eras of our lifetime.

Nintendo 64

Nintendo 64

If your siblings were anything like mine, then you all spent hours in the basement watching each other play video games like Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007, Diddy Kong Racing and so many more on your N64! The only thing you needed was an old notebook filled with cheat codes and two good controllers…which on most occasions, was asking a lot.

Named after it’s 64-bit processing unit, the Nintendo 64 was the pioneer console for 3D graphics and gameplay following its launch. So much so, in fact, that Time named the gaming system their 1996 Machine of the Year proclaiming that the Nintendo 64 reached “the most realistic and compelling three-dimensional experience ever presented by a computer”.

Anyone else have the itch to bust this retro tech out for another spin?

As a kid, what was better than witnessing someone get slimed on shows like Double Dare or Figure It Out?

Do you remember the absolute joy that overcame you when watching cartoons like Hey Arnold and Rugrats?

No matter how you slice it, Nickelodeon was the reason why you were running to your TV every Saturday morning. If you weren’t careful, you found yourself spending a lot of summer days inside…which, listen…does not sound as bad if you decided to watch active shows like Rocket Power.

Woogidy! Woogidy!

Remember playing Pokémon Yellow on your Gameboy Color? How about asking your parents for both Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red fully knowing that they were both the same exact game? Yeesh, what a great business model!

And it was not just the video games, it was the binder after binder filled to the brim with cards of all these funny creatures.

Ahh the high we would all ride with each new holographic card…nothing can compare.

Today, games & movies like Pokémon Go and Detective Pikachu help keep the OG Pokémon crew (somewhat) content. Sure, walking around and catching virtual Pokémon can’t beat popping your new Pokémon Gold into your Gameboy, but it’s a start.

The Wonder Ball

Yes. This decadent sphere of chocolate wrapped in colored tin foil was a true treat. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Surprise candy inside?!

Ok, sold.

The excitement of cracking open that chocolatey shell and finding colorful confectionary inside was a treat in its own. Sure, the candy wasn’t exactly top notch, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was finding your free sticker while eating your way to the hollow center.

Their catchy song said it best “Who knows what surprises a Wonderball can hide!”

Britney Spears & Baby One More Time

You know we had to throw her in here. In one of the most iconic songs, Baby One More Time, B Spears made all the guys swoon and all the girls envious. Not only is this still a bop today, but this was Britney’s breakout song, and for that, our preteen selves need to be thankful.

Imagine a life without Brit?

Is it even possible?

I don’t know, and I don’t want to find out. She evolved into one of pop music’s biggest icons, but it all started with those iconic braids and pink puff scrunchies.

Fanny Packs

Back in the day, nothing truly screamed cool and convenient like a fresh new fanny pack. This prized zippered pouch was the go-to accessory for a day at the beach, an amusement park, or....well, really any occasion.

And the best part?

Those colorful kangaroo-like pouches are still popular today!

Fanny packs are makin’ a comeback ;)

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

“Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air.”

Name one thing from the nineties that was more iconic than this beloved sitcom…it’s fine, I’ll wait…you can’t! This show was the 1990’s thanks to Will Smith and his hip-hop fashion, comical one-liners and overall retro vibe.

P.S. -- BIG FAN of all the reruns!
